Biennale Internationale de Design 2008

Collective exhibition at Biennale de Design de Saint-Etienne (France), from 15th to 30th November 2008

La Belgique des autres / The other Belgians

Belgium both longs for and rejects national identity, in a constant endeavour to combine its divisions and diversity with the nation's unshakeable "Belgitude". Starting from a sharp yet lively reflection on the concept of 'nation', a term nowadays quite anachronistic, we decided to look at the Belgium of 'the foreigner'. This meant looking at the multicultural nature of a country where the ideas of belonging and of nation often tend to be championed by those who do not 'belong'.

From world-renowned designers to students, from Belgian or from elsewhere: this display makes no claim to be an exhaustive record of Belgium's cultural diversity. The analysis concentrates on the objects and their utility, functional, aesthetic, cultural and social. The story behind them is left to the designers themselves.

On this occasion Belgium as a whole is united around this theme: the French and Dutch-speaking Communities, the design institutions of Wallonia and Flanders (Wallonie-Bruxelles Design/Mode and Design Flanders), are joint partners in "La Belgique des autres / The other Belgians".
