100% Design Londres 2009 - photo stand

Wallonie-Bruxelles Design/Mode returns after two years to 100% design London with a selection of forward-looking designers who add fundamental value within the framework of contemporary theories of 'experience design': design that tells a story.

Design telling us stories

The expressiveness of design from Wallonia and Brussels is now well known. The Surrealist movement in art and applied arts from these regions has had an undeniable influence: the duo of literature and the visual arts seems to renew itself in the contemporary scene, where design expresses its function sometimes in a poetic form, sometimes more directly, but always in a manner that transcends the function, through narration, where the object becomes the vector for the content.

Design creates scenarios, suggests solutions and opportunities, giving rise to appropriate behaviour. By using the object we read and discover it: functionality, eco-design, ergonomics, multi-usage, flexibility, durability. The more an object has 'sense' rather than 'form', the more it lends itself to use in a sustainable manner. The object becomes part of our environment and our life, present and future, building on a desire to improve it. The stories behind the product reassure us and raise our awareness. The object becomes an interface. The techniques and materials used represent the language, the vocabulary, but at the same time by defending ancient practices or proposing innovative solutions, they provide content.
